Lake Oconee Living has announced winners of its inaugural Readers’ Choice Awards after tallying results from their online poll. Thousands of people cast votes for their favorite people, places, and things in the Lake Oconee region, determining the winners in 45 different categories, from best burger to best volunteer organization.

Lake Oconee Living relied on its readers to nominate and vote for the Best of Lake Oconee. The magazine first called for nominations in its Spring 2009 issue. In two months, the magazine received over 800 nominations from readers. All nominees appeared on the magazine’s online poll, which first opened last July 1.

In order to hear from as many readers as possible, Lake Oconee Living left its poll open throughout the summer. Voters were discouraged from completing the survey more than once by technology that allowed only one online voter per IP address. By the time the poll closed at noon on October 9, 4,319 people had voted, determining the winners listed below.

“This is the first time the magazine has hosted a readers’ choice poll,” said Ramsey Nix, editor of the publication. “It has been a great way to gauge our readers’ interests and to celebrate our community. I hope we can do it again next year.”

Dock 103.9 FM will announce winners on the radio sporadically starting on Saturday, October 10, and readers can look forward to seeing the Best of Lake Oconee winners featured in the Winter 2010 issue of Lake Oconee Living magazine.

“We plan to feature all the winners to discover why our readers chose them. I’m personally looking forward to tasting the best barbeque and buttermilk pie in the region,” said Nix.
